Boundless Hearts

Boundless Hearts invites you to attend Mother’s Morning/Mourning on Saturday, May 12th (the day before Mother’s Day) from 9:00 a.m. - 12 p.m., beginning at Lake Merritt in Oakland, and ending at Oakland’s City Hall Pavilion. All people are welcome.

Why Mother’s Morning/Mourning? The violent deaths in Oakland are depriving mothers, fathers, relatives, friends, and community of life, potential, and hope. A mother’s loss is unique. Her grief is not like any other grief, and her need for healing is not like any other need. As the losses have mounted over the years, we want to attend, on May 12th, to the spiritual needs of a community of mothers with a greater awareness of the need to hold the mother, and her offspring, as sacred.

On Saturday, May 12th, we will gather at Lake Merritt (gathering at the 20th & Harrison side). At 9:00 we will ring our meditation bowls, and gongs. At 9:05, we will chant, and at 9:10 we will stand in silent meditation and prayer. At 9:15 we will silently and slowly proceed to the City Hall pavilion (about 6 blocks) at Frank Ogawa Plaza. We will remain in silent reflection until the program begins at 10:00 a.m. Please bring an object or photograph for the altar. The program of prayer, meditation, communion, song, movement, and ritual will end at 12:00 p.m.

We are asking that all participants wear red. Red is the color of blood, the blood that represents energy, life, death, and divine creativity that flows throughout Oakland.

As a mother would risk her own life
To protect her child, her only child,
So toward all beings should one
Cultivate a boundless heart
Above, below, and all around
Without obstruction, without hate and without ill-will.

The Metta Sutta, translated by Gil Fronsdal in his book, The Issue at Hand
